Atmospheric Perspective

On a beautiful afternoon, I subbed for a fellow drawing instructor, Cindy Imhoff. She assigned her student to create the effect of distance, a traditional Renaissance technique. The Italian master painters used both value and color to create this effect.

For this assignment,no color was used, only charcoal. However, even without color, by using gray scale values, artists can achieve a very effective illusion of depth.

The red boat emphasis the illustion of depth achieved by the technique of atmospheric perspective: high contrast values and fully saturated colors are in the foreground, and in the background, the colors have less contrast, become lighter and cooler.
